Bill Mense.
My insurance career began in 1977 following graduation from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio with my BSBA in Finance. My family has been in the insurance business since 1914. So my career began with my father stating that if I wanted to eat, I will see you Monday morning. The best piece of advice came on that Monday with "Today is the smartest day of the rest of your life." This was from Richard Tilney, CPCU.

I am now a partner with United Heartland Insurance Agencies in Hamilton, Ohio. We are a consolidation of agents with similar family heritages reflecting the values of our forefathers.

I taught for the Independent Insurance Agents of Ohio for about 6 years. My subjects were CGL and Business Auto. I also taught the "old" CLM manual back in the day when paper was still used. Education has always been important in our constantly changing world. I also act as a consultant with Prometrics and The State of Ohio for the annual license exam review.

My outside interests include trains , both real and model, reading, and playing tennis. You need to get away from this business at the end of the day.

AmrheinChris.jpgChris Amrhein, AAI is a professional insurance educator and consultant, and the former Vice President of Industry Affairs with the Independent Insurance Agents of America. When he authorizes it, we'll add something funny here.

Visit Chris' website at www.InsuranceIsFun.com.
Email Chris at chris@insuranceisfun.com.

Chris Amrhein, like most true believers in insurance, stumbled upon this business accidentally; specifically, after graduating from college and needing a job.

After beginning in this business as a life-health agent, he graduated to property-casualty sales where he first met the greatest mine of comedy material existing today, the ISO forms. Following several years as a producer and independent agency manager/owner, Chris spent many years as a full-time educator/VP-Education for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents and VP-Education for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America. Those years found him traveling about the country teaching seminars on everything from agency management to the claims made CGL. It has also taught him the absolute truth of Jimmy Buffet's famous observation about those who make a career of the property-casualty business: "If we weren't all crazy we would go insane."

Chris is now a speaker, consultant, seminar leader and training developer, and resides in Lorton, Virginia, with the love of his life (and wife) Donna and youngest son Alexandru (18). His two older sons - Patrick, 35 and Kevin, 33 – are doing quite well without him. His email address chris@insuranceisfun.com and website www.insuranceisfun.com, say it all.

ThompsonDavid.jpgDavid Thompson, CPCU, AAI, API, CRIS is a full-time instructor for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA) and one of the top personal lines technical experts in the country. After ten years in the agency business, he taught insurance for a local community college, then served as a contract instructor for FAIA until accepting a full-time position in 1996. He says he maintains his sanity by running marathons, though we believe that this proves just the opposite...you be the judge.

Click David's photo to email him.

After receiving his bachelors degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and serving seven years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard, David began his insurance career in a family owned independent agency in Vero Beach, Florida where he was licensed as a general lines and life & health agent selling all lines of insurance.

He worked as a contract instructor for Florida Association of Insurance Agents until he accepted a full time position with them in August of 1996. David presents continuing education seminars throughout the country on a variety of insurance subjects.

When he is not teaching insurance he maintains his sanity by running, having logged nearly 20,000 miles since 1975. He considers running marathons to be fun and has successfully completed ten 26.2 mile races. He claims he runs so he can eat more BBQ and considers himself a BBQ connoisseur.

He and his wife have a married daughter who uses her hard earned allowance to pay for the high limits of liability coverage her "insurance nerd dad" makes her carry! And an application as a Project InVEST student has already been filed for his new granddaughter.

Jjaywilliams.jpgay Williams, CIC, CRM, AAI, AIP, ACSR is a veteran of the insurance industry, starting his career in 1979. His agency history includes being a producer, setting up and managing an agency marketing department, commercial lines manager, VP/agency operations manager, and an agency owner.

Jay worked with the Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA) starting in 2000 as a sub-contractor and subsequently became a staff member in May of 2001. He was the Managing Director of FAIA Member Services, Inc., the Association’s for-profit subsidiary.  In that capacity, Jay wrote and edited the study manuals for both the FL Agent and FL Adjuster licensing exams while also serving on the Exam Review Committee.

In 2009 Jay was recruited by Bankers Insurance Group to be the President of Bankers Underwriters, Inc., their sales and marketing subsidiary. At the same time, he was also made President of Bankers Employer Services, Inc., their Professional Employer Organization set up for the purposes of distributing Workers’ Compensation through their Independent Agent network.

In 2012 Jay became the VP of Sales and Agency Relations for UPC Insurance Company based in St. Petersburg, FL. Prior to stepping down from that position, he was instrumental in taking the company from single-state model to a multi-state organization currently writing in nine states and licensed in 18.

Jay most recently served as the Interim CEO for Applied Client Network, the association of member users of Applied System agency management software. He was instrumental in the successful transition to their new relationship with SmithBucklin.

Jay has been teaching formal insurance classes since January, 2000.  He began teaching the Florida 200-hour pre-licensing class. While with FAIA/FMS, he taught numerous technical insurance classes.  In addition, Jay is a highly respected authority on agency E&O loss control. During his term at FAIA/FMS he served on IIABA’s Loss Control Working Group for a number of years and was a member of the Professional Liability Committee for IIABA that oversees the national Big I E&O programs when he left FAIA in 2009. His experience on the agency, association, and company sides gives him a uniquely rounded perspective on the insurance industry.

Jay is currently a consultant to insurance companies, associations, and industry-related partners. In addition to teaching classes across the country, he also serves as an expert witness and a subject matter expert.

LuceyJean.jpgJean E. Lucey, CPCU is the former Library Director for the Insurance Library Association of Boston.

Education:
University at Albany (New York)
BA in English (Spanish minor), 1968
Masters in Library Science, 1969
Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation conferred 1986

Work experience:
Librarian and substitute teacher, Central Square Public Schools, Central Square, NY, 1969-1973
Tucker-Smith Insurance Agency, Delmar, NY, 1973-1979
Insurance Library Association of Boston, 1979-2012 (Director 1980-2012)
I am a participant in the IIABA’s Virtual University program.

The independent Tucker-Smith Insurance agency sold and serviced a book of business that was roughly 70% personal lines, 30% commercial. During my first year with the agency, I obtained my New York State broker’s license. I dealt with insureds directly, both in and out of the office, and developed my own book of business at the urging of the agency owner.

Upon a move with my husband to Boston in 1979 when a job opportunity presented itself to him, I began working at the Insurance Library Association of Boston. When the then-Director left in early 1980, I became the Director, serving in that role until retirement from it in November of 2012. My responsibilities at the Library, in addition to administrative functions and oversight of an extensive education program, included the performance of reference and research work regarding insurance and insurance coverage. Some of the research was responsive to inquiries from consumers, but the majority (80%) was initiated by insurance agents, expert witnesses and consultants, and attorneys.

I have a strong grounding in all property/casualty lines of insurance and am familiar with many nuances of coverage. Perhaps more important, I recognize when a better understanding of any particular matter is necessary, and know how to perform effective, targeted research. Such research is clearly most productive when primary sources, such as bulletins and notices from the Insurance Services Office, are available.

In terms of coverage, my particular areas of strength are:
· Commercial General Liability
· Commercial Property
· Homeowners and personal auto

Functional strengths include:
· Summary and analysis of policy language and terms
· Underwriting
· Agents’ legal responsibilities

About the Insurance Library Association of Boston

The Insurance Library Association of Boston was founded by industry leaders in 1887 and has operated continuously since that year. The collection has grown in the intervening years and now encompasses materials both historical and contemporary, all of which are cataloged by subject-specific librarians. That means that a volume from 1885 may well sit on a shelf next to one from 2009 if their topics are the same. We subscribe to scores of insurance periodicals, all of which we index in a proprietary database. And of course, some of our patrons’ information needs are best met through use of the online services to which we subscribe, many of which might prove prohibitive in cost to those patrons.

We like to think that we can provide information on any insurance-related subject, old or new. Sometimes that means we are tracing an insurance company that merged, changed its name, or was dissolved in decades past (we always like it when we can find a current incarnation). Sometimes we are finding items from the insurance trade press that talk about changes in standard coverage forms that are contemporary to when those changes were being made and shed light on the rationale. Sometimes we are finding case law interpreting various policy provisions. Every day seems to bring something new.

An education program begun in 1890 still makes available a wide variety of insurance-related courses including classes addressing the curriculum of the Insurance Institute of America and the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters. Special seminars provide focus on more specific subjects and issues.

We are a non-profit 501[c][3] organization and receive no public funds. We are open at no charge to members of the public, including students, who have a need for the information we can provide. Our main sources of support are annual membership dues and revenue from our education programs, supplemented by research fees. Members are charged nothing in additional to document provision charges (scans, photocopies and the like) if we are answering an uncomplicated “reference” question for them. If we are asked to perform in-depth research into a particular subject, members are charged a reduced hourly rate: non-members pay a higher rate, and are required to pay for at least one hour of our time up-front.

Our members number some 425 individuals and firms from states all over the country. Anyone who needs reliable information about insurance can benefit from a membership. Much additional information about the Insurance Library Association of Boston and its activities can be found on our website at www.insurancelibrary.org. The website also facilitates email communication with the staff, and can be used to establish a membership or register for a class.

EubankJohn.jpg

John Eubank, industry titan, mentor, and friend passed away in June 2017.
John directly affected many lives and careers – of this, there is no doubt - but we can’t even begin to count the number of insurance professionals indirectly affected by John’s legacy.

Chris Boggs writes...

Not many in the insurance industry cast as long a shadow as did John Eubank. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to develop a professional and a somewhat personal relationship with John.

In my prior position as the director of Insurance Journal's Academy of Insurance, I developed a professional relationship with John, contracting him to teach several classes for me. When I transitioned to IIABA as Bill Wilson's successor, I was able to develop more of a personal relationship with John.

I began my career with Insurance Services Office (ISO), where John served as a vice president. However, I never had the chance to meet him in that role because he left ISO two years before I started. But my dad knew him and was quite sad to hear of his passing. My dad worked for the North Carolina Fire Insurance Rating Bureau – ISO's predecessor in North Carolina.

Sadly, the only opportunity I had to spend any real time with John was this past December at the 2016 Southern Agents Conference (SAC) in Atlanta, Ga. This was my first conference as an IIABA employee and thankfully I was able to have dinner with John and two other insurance geeks, Bill Wilson and Greg Deimling.

My time with John was regrettably short. I was looking forward to spending more time with him at this and upcoming year's SAC.

John was part of an ultra-secret insurance group known as the G5. I can only imagine this stands for "Geek 5." There was nothing sinister about this "secret" group, they were just a bit weirder than the rest of us who consider ourselves insurance geeks. They would go to the lake on weekends and spend all their time reading insurance policies and court cases. These are the gentlemen who knew John best.

Members of the G5 have memorialized John in their own way. I have excerpted a couple of their memorials and thoughts and am providing links to their articles where available.

Bill Wilson writes...

Last week I lost a dear friend and mentor and the industry lost a bright light. Many of my blog subscribers don't know John Eubank but a lot of you do, at least by reputation. If you know someone who knew John or had attended a seminar or webinar of his, please pass a link on to this post.

John had been a leader in insurance and risk management education for the past 30 years through the literally thousands of seminars and webinars he had conducted across the country, quite a feat given that John would not fly. I won't belabor his comprehensive resume of experience and accomplishments going back to his graduation as an engineer in the 1960s…you can see his brief bio at the end of this page.

I first met John when he was with the Tennessee Inspection Bureau, an Insurance Services Office (ISO) predecessor. The Western Actuarial Bureau in Chicago offered an engineering scholarship at Illinois Institute of Technology which had one of only two 4-year degree programs in fire protection engineering in the country, and he visited my high school to see if there was interest in the scholarship. I had already enrolled in a local university and planned to be a high school math/science teacher. But I couldn't pass the chance for a free ride at a top university, so I was the only applicant from my school and ended up getting the scholarship and ultimately graduating and going to work for ISO.

From the outset of my career at ISO, John groomed me for a management position, moving through a typical career path that led to me becoming the manager of ISO field operations in Tennessee and Kentucky when John was appointed a regional ISO Vice President. I can recall, as part of an ISO management development program, when John introduced me to delegation when he was still a state manager. To keep current on the industry, he had to review at least a dozen weekly and monthly industry publications, from Best's Review to the National Underwriter. One of my tasks was to take over reading these publications and mark the ones that he should read. It's a classic example I've used in management classes to illustrate how to properly delegate so that both parties benefit and one doesn't feel dumped on. I learned an awful lot from this.

Prior to my move into management, he had "encouraged" me to get the CPCU designation and he taught CPCU classes for many years in Nashville before leaving ISO 30 years ago to start his own education firm, Professional Insurance Education, Inc. As far as technical knowledge of commercial lines policy forms goes, John had few peers. When it came to commercial lines coding and rating, I don't think he had any peers outside ISO's Jersey City headquarters. On top of that, like the late, great Don Malecki, CPCU, John was a trove of historical information on the insurance industry.

No one in the industry has had a greater impact on my career than John. He was a mentor, an inspiration and a friend. I and others who knew him will miss him. For those of you who had the privilege of being one of his students, I hope you will continue to be motivated and inspired to learn your craft and serve your customer base as he did. RIP, good friend.

Bill's full tribute can be found here.

David Thompson writes...

The insurance industry lost an icon when John Eubank, CPCU, ARM passed away. Space does not permit a description of John's 50-plus year career in the insurance industry; you can read John's biography here. I learned years ago that no one is irreplaceable, but the ability to fill the shoes that John left behind is nearly impossible.

I first met John through the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America's Virtual University (VU). The VU has an "Ask An Expert" service where agents around the country can pose questions and the VU director (Formerly Bill Wilson, now fellow "Insurance Nerd" and industry veteran Chris Boggs) sends those questions to a cadre of about 50 Insurance Nerd volunteers. Answers are collected and sent to the person who asked the question. I have served as a VU volunteer since the day it was founded, as did John and several other agents around the country. Most VU volunteers would echo my thoughts of, "I have gained 50 times what I gave to the VU."

I quickly picked up that John "had it all together." He was well versed in almost every type of insurance, even when he would say, "I don't know much about personal lines." John's true expertise was in CGL, commercial property, business auto, and especially crime coverage. John could spout off form numbers and edition dates like I spout off good BBQ restaurants. I often said, "John Eubank has forgotten more about insurance that I'll ever hope to know." We swapped thousands of emails and scores of phone calls over the last 10-15 years. John could give you the history of almost every ISO form back to the day when ISO was formed.

John Eubank was like the sportscaster John Madden; neither of them would fly. John drove the biggest Lincoln he could buy all over the country. When I asked John why he didn't fly he said, "The last time I flew the pilot landed long and we wound up in the parking lot of a gas station." I must admit, John had a valid reason not to fly!

Hundreds, probably thousands, of insurance professionals are better educated because of John. I put myself near the top of that list. John made you learn, but you realized that it was fun learning…especially from him.

Yes, our industry lost an icon; many of us also lost a good friend. John's legacy will live on for a long time. Farewell, my friend.

David's full memorial can be found here.

Mike Edwards writes...

John devoted his entire 55-year career to insurance. After 25 years of distinguished service with ISO, John retired and founded Professional Insurance Education in 1987. In the ensuing 30 years, John presented countless seminars and other educational programs. John had few equals in his deep knowledge of technical coverages, and his ability to explain coverages to an audience. His dedication to excellence was an inspiring example to many of his students, and to all of us who were his colleagues.

When I was an education director for a state Big-I association, we had a running joke about John when we were preparing seminar marketing materials to send out to members. We said that all we really needed to do was simply announce "Seminar by John Eubank," and the attendance would be robust.

For anyone who attended his presentations, and especially for those of us who had the good fortune to work closely with John on an almost daily basis, "professional insurance education" equally describes both his work, and John himself. We will miss you, my dear friend.

Michael has been in the Property & Casualty insurance business since 1983, when he began his insurance career by founding a risk management consulting firm. There he conducted risk management and alternative insurance program studies for local, state, quasi-governmental, and federal agencies; national and regional trade associations; and privately-held commercial enterprises.

In 1985, Michael co-founded a managing general agency/underwriter specializing in public entities, transit operations, commercial towing companies, automobile dealerships, and specialty errors and omissions programs. When this company was sold in 1990 to a national brokerage operation, Michael continued with this broker, where he served as the Executive Vice President of Underwriting for Specialty Programs. In 1992, Michael opened a personal lines retail agency for a local bank and expanded the agency’s reach into an eleven-county area of North Carolina. In 1992, Michael also started a commercial insurance agency and operated that agency until it was sold to a key employee in 2004. In 1998, Gay founded a Program Manager, writing public entities on behalf of a large, national insurer. This company was sold in 2003 to a national brokerage operation. Following a two-year sabbatical, in 2005 Michael went to work for a regional transportation managing general agent as its Director of Marketing. In 2008, Michael went to work for Volvo Financial Services to run their national insurance operation, Volvo Insurance Services, where he is currently employed as the National Sales Manager of Coach & Insurance.

In 1991, Gay qualified with the North Department of Insurance to teach insurance continuing education classes. Michael teaches continuing education classes, and provides litigation support to attorneys as a property and casualty insurance expert witness in the areas of complex insurance coverage issues, and insurance agents’ duties and responsibilities.

Michael has earned the professional insurance designations of Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Insurance Consultant (CIC), Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and Construction Risk & Insurance Specialist (CRIS). He holds a property and casualty insurance license in 49 states. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Liberty University with a B.S. EdwardsMike.jpgMike Edwards, CPCU, AAI heads an insurance training firm in Atlanta, GA. He has previously served as the Director of Education for the Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana, and as a Senior Instructor with the Florida Association of Insurance Agents. Prior to becoming a full-time insurance trainer, Mike taught geography and civics at Rosenwald Jr. High School in Panama City, Florida for nine years, during which he also served as Social Studies Department Head. While at Rosenwald, he developed a phobia about chalk, and milk in little tiny cartons, which haunts him to this day.

Mike is a native of Panama City, Florida, and his early experiences making up fish stories proved excellent preparation for teaching insurance later in life. He was born in the same year as The Roswell Incident, which conceivably gives a whole new meaning to "alien insurance." Throughout high school, he worked part time as a file clerk in a local independent agency, and was a pioneer in the idea of transactional filing (or, "putting everything in a big folder at the end of the day," as he originally called it).

A member of the Charter Class of 1969, Mike graduated from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida, with a degree in history/education. He taught geography and civics at Rosenwald Jr. High School in Panama City for nine years, during which he also served as Social Studies Department Head.  He still has a phobia about chalk, and milk in little tiny cartons.

Looking to work in an environment that was both less stressful and more sane, he mistakenly decided to teach insurance. In 1980, he joined the staff of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents in Tallahassee, as an instructor. During his thirteen years at FAIA, Mike developed and taught a wide range of courses in personal lines, commercial lines, sales, and customer service.

In addition to his teaching and course development work, Mike served as editor for two FAIA technical publications, "Advanced Education Homeowners" and "Advanced Education Commercial Property." He was also very involved in FAIA's extensive catastrophe planning work, including development of the Agency Catastrophe Assistance Volunteer Network. Mike also was the editor of the FAIA "Agent's Catastrophe Guide."

Another area of responsibility Mike had was coordinating FAIA's sponsorship of Project InVEST, which grew to over twenty schools by 1993. For his work on Project InVEST, the Independent Insurance Agents of America named him "National Staff Person of the Year" in 1992.

Addicted by now to the chaotic, high-anxiety world of insurance, Mike moved to Baton Rouge in 1996 to become the Director of Education for the Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana.

In 2001, Mike moved to Atlanta and started Edwards & Associates, an insurance training firm.  He has presented seminars in a number of states, none of which have invited him back for a second time.  Among the more popular seminars are “The Trouble Our Kids Get Us Into,” “The Great Insurance Time Machine,” “How To Get Sued Without Really Trying,” “When Fools Fall In Love – How Romance Can Screw Up Your Insurance,” “Insuring Life’s Ups And Downs,” “Beyond ACV & RC – Valuation Issues In Insurance,” “The Insurance Adventures of Jack and Jill Smith,” “Insurance And The Courts – When Worlds Collide,” “Hidden Treasures – Finding Coverage In Exclusions,” “Wheels, Rudders And Wings,” “Survival Skills In The E&O Jungle,” and “Privacy Issues in Insurance – The Fair Credit Reporting Act.”

Mike is a faculty member for the IIABA Virtual University.  He also has had articles published by the CPCU Society and the National Association of Insurance Women.

Mike's wife Gloria is an insurance agent and surplus lines broker, so they are never without topics for dinner and weekend conversations. Another advantage is that neighbors don't hang around much, once the subject of insurance comes up. This business does have its rewards.

Mike can be contacted at medwards65@aol.com.

Paul Z. Martin, CPCU is an education consultant and owner of PZ Martin Education Strategies, Inc., a firm dedicated to making insurance industry professionals better through customized education and support. His varied insurance career includes experience as an adjuster, underwriter, special agent, company manager, independent agent, and over a decade as an insurance educator in Texas.

Paul is a Texas native and graduate of Texas A&M University where he earned a BBA in Management. He began his career in insurance right out of school becoming a multi-line “old school” claims adjuster where he was given a brief case, camera, a stack of settlement forms, and some drafts and instructed to take care of every claim in his territory – car accidents, workers’ compensation claims, homeowners losses, everything. Fortunately that territory was familiar, surrounding his hometown of Tyler, Texas. The experience not only gave him a wide-ranging education in insurance coverage, but it taught him what insurance policyholders and claimants alike really want, to be treated in friendly and respectful manner during a stressful time in their lives.

Eventually, Paul was given the chance to widen his experience in insurance by becoming what was then an endangered species, and which today is practically extinct, a special agent for a regional insurer. As a special agent, Paul was responsible for the commercial underwriting, and marketing, for over 60 independent agencies in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. There he developed particular expertise in writing large difficult workers compensation led accounts. Tutored by experienced veterans in the business, Paul thrived as he continued his professional education.
The underwriter gig eventually turned into a chance to become a partner in a family agency in Jackson, Mississippi. Here he learned how the bills really get paid as an agent, with sales. He learned what it took to sell to oil and gas operators, poultry processors, manufacturers, municipalities, schools, and much more. Again, the theme was large accounts, often with problems needing special attention, and working with underwriters to find a way to get accounts written. Eventually, the tug of home lead Paul onto his next insurance adventure, joining the fledgling Texas Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fund in Austin, Texas.

The Fund was operating in a period of market anxiety in Texas and Paul was recruited to speak to the public, the current and future policyholders of the Fund, about its mission, its services and the environment that a new workers’ compensation statute had created in Texas. His public education efforts were followed by new agency education programs, which eventually lead him into management.

Paul left the Fund to join the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas in the mid 90’s as a staff agent educator and course writer. He later became the director of education for the association where he lead in the development of new course programs, new education formats, new certification programs, and managed delivery of over 250 days of classroom training all across Texas. He also was the central contact for new producers and young agents in the state, a natural fit given his many years of training new producers.
Today Paul enjoys pouring his experience and teaching into industry professionals however and whenever he can.
