| Each year, Trusted Choice® acknowledges the time, effort and enthusiasm its member agencies give back to their communities with an award named for Dan Fulwider—a former government affairs coordinator and membership liaison for the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa, who inspired many people with his personality and dedication to his community.
In recognition of Fulwider’s community involvement, Trusted Choice established an annual $2,500 award for a selected agency to donate to a charity of its choice. At this morning’s general session breakfast during the Big “I” Legislative Conference, Big “I” Chairman David Walker (pictured above right) presented the 2015 Dan Fulwider Award for Community Involvement to Paul Schoonover (pictured above left) of Gardiner Allen DeRoberts Insurance in Columbus, Ohio.
Schoonover has diligently brought awareness to drug-use prevention after losing his 21-year-old son to a heroin overdose just one day after his son completed an inpatient rehab program. Working with Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Schoonover helped launch the “Start Talking” program—giving parents, educators and community leaders the tools to start the conversation with youth about the importance of living healthy, drug-free lives.
Schoonover is also the Board Chair for Tyler’s Light, a non-profit that aims to provide education and awareness around substance abuse, as well as resources for family members and friends who are involved in the battle against addiction. The $2,500 award will benefit Tyler’s Light.
