East Hartford Job Shadow
Neal Montgomery, St. Paul Travelers Director of Agency Development, and Sandra Skipper, National InVEST Program Manager, visit with InVEST students at East Hartford High School. During the February 1, 2005 visit, Neal – industry liaison for the class – explained to the students the ramifications within the insurance industry if the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) is not renewed. St. Paul Travelers hosted their third annual Job Shadow Event on February 2, 2005. Participating in the event were students enrolled in InVEST classes at Bloomfield, Bulkeley and East Hartford high schools. Students were matched with “career mentors” and had the opportunity to learn firsthand about specific careers in the insurance industry by shadowing industry professionals. St. Paul Travelers has graciously agreed to share their job shadow planning materials. Click here to access these documents. National Job Shadow Day begins on Groundhog Day – February 2 – each year. According to the National Job Shadow Coalition, “Job shadowing is an academically motivating activity designed to give kids an up-close look at the world of work and to answer the question, ‘Why do I have to learn this?’ Beginning with a nationwide kickoff on February 2 and continuing throughout the school year, students across America ‘shadow’ workplace mentors as they go through a normal day on the job. Students get to see firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace.” To learn more about job shadow event planning, visit the Job Shadow Coalition website at www.jobshadow.org and see the sample timeline below. November- Begin planning process by deciding which school or schools to invite, asking staff members if they would like to host the students in their department and customizing the forms to meet the needs of the particular Job Shadow event. When drafting the cover letter it should be clear and specific so as to define what needs to be done. A timeline for completion should also be included in the letter. December- Send out cover letter with Parent/Guardian Consent Form, Medical Consent Form and Image Release Form (optional) to teacher. January- The deadline to receive the attendee roster from the teacher should be sometime during the first week in January. Two weeks prior to the event host a conference call with teachers and staff to make sure that everyone is connected on meeting events, responsibilities and expectations. Make sure consent forms are received by the end of the month. February- Host students for Job Shadow event. Make sure all student evaluation forms are received after being completed in a classroom exercise. The documents available for download include:
