During today's Big "I" Legislative Conference Breakfast, Spencer Houldin, Big "I" chairman, presented Cappy Stults, president of Allen & Stults Co., Inc. in Hightstown, New Jersey, with the 2017 Woodworth Memorial Award—the highest honor the Big "I" bestows on an individual member.
The prestigious award, established in 1925 in memory of the second Big "I" president C.H. Woodworth, recognizes the outstanding contributions of an independent agent or broker to the national association, their Big "I" colleagues and the insurance industry.
"Described by his peers and association staff as a selfless leader to the Big 'I,' Cappy handled big challenges with great success in every role," Houldin said when presenting the award.
Stults began his Big "I" service by founding the New Jersey Young Agents Committee in 1974. From that point on, he became one of the most active members in the history of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New Jersey, serving as state president—a position his father and grandfather also held—as well as New Jersey's director on the national Big "I" Board of Directors. Today, he continues serving his state association as a member of the Finance Committee.
At the national level, Stults chaired the Finance Committee and Bylaws Committee. He was a driving force behind starting the Big "I" Reinsurance Corporation, serving as chairman of the board. Outside the industry, Stults has also been active in his town council, the Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge, YMCA, Rotary Club and Piercefield Conservators, among other organizations.
"He is one of the most respected people I know," said Sheri Acconzo, president & CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New Jersey, in her letter nominating Stults for the award. "He is frequently sought after for his guidance and foresight. He has been a great mentor to many. He has made, and continues to make, a significant contribution to this association and to our industry."
