| David Bates, Big "I" agent and public servant, passed away March 8 in his home state of Rhode Island. As owner and president of the A.N. Nunes Insurance Agency in Bristol, Rhode Island, Bates was an active member of the Big "I" at the state and national levels. He served as Big "I" national board director for Rhode Island and as Big "I" state Government Affairs Subcommittee chairman. Bates also served on the Big "I" Government Affairs Committee. In 1999, for his dedication to protecting and representing independent agents in Rhode Island and across the country, Bates received the Sydney O. Smith award—the association's highest individual government affairs honor. In addition to his profession as an insurance agent, Bates served in the Rhode Island Senate from 1993 to 2007. "David was a true blue dedicated Big 'I' leader who advocated for independent agents on a daily basis," says Bob Rusbuldt, Big "I" president & CEO. "Professionally, Dave was passionate about the industry, serving his community and the Big 'I.' He will be sorely missed." The obituary for Sen.
