Yes, I know – another article about Artificial Intelligence?! If “AI" in the title is enough to turn you away, I don't blame you. These days, everyone is trying to share their hot takes, tips, and tricks on AI while the iron's hot. But let's be honest, if you're not staying updated on the latest and greatest AI tech (which seems to be changing week-to-week), it can feel like you're missing out, or worse: being left behind. To many on the periphery of the AI boom, it might feel like watching other people take off on rocket-powered cars while being stuck on the sidewalk with a wagon; sure, it gets the job done and feels familiar, but it's not getting you the results you need to stay competitive with everyone else's rocket-cars.
If that's how you're feeling, then maybe you should keep reading, since I found a little pocket of sanity in all this AI-craze, one that I think displays some of the best qualities of the independent insurance community. I found an AI work group, and I think you should, too.
What am I getting myself into?
If you haven't been part of a work group before, think of it as a bunch of professionals getting together to chat about industry issues and brainstorm solutions. It's all about community, sharing ideas, and working together to make things better. In the world of AI and the independent insurance industry, these groups are super helpful because they offer support, guidance, and innovative ideas.
Whether you'd like to join a work group or start your own, here are some key elements to keep in mind:
- Encourage Open Discussion: The whole point is to create a relaxed space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences. No judging here – just constructive feedback and creative brainstorming.
- Meet Regularly: Keeping the momentum going is key. Regular meetups make sure everyone stays engaged and informed. Whether it's weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, consistency is the name of the game.
- Neutral Forum: It's important that the work group is a neutral zone where folks from different backgrounds – even competitors – can come together without any bias or conflicts. This way, everyone gets a fair shot at contributing.
- Assign Homework: To keep things moving forward, members should have a little homework to do between meetings. This keeps everyone involved and ensures the group's goals are always progressing.
- Action Items: Most meetings should conclude with clear, actionable steps that members can take back to their own roles. These steps are what drive success for everyone involved and make sure the discussions lead to real-world results.
When you add these elements, a work group becomes a fantastic tool for sparking innovation and achieving success within the independent insurance industry. It not only helps each member grow, but it also pushes the whole industry forward.
What are you getting from joining?
Now that we understand what to expect from a work group, let's check out the potential benefits. These benefits may differ between groups, but generally include:
- Knowledge Sharing: Work groups provide a platform where members can share their expertise, experiences, and insights. This collective knowledge can help you stay ahead of industry trends and improve your own skills.
- Problem Solving: Collaborating with a diverse group of professionals allows you to brainstorm and develop innovative solutions to common industry challenges. This collaborative environment fosters creativity and drives progress. Stuck on the “build or buy" question? Ask your group and see what they think!
- Professional Growth: Participating in regular discussions and activities within the work group can help you build new skills, gain confidence, and advance your career. This factor can be especially important with how AI has shaken up many corporate ladders.
And hopefully you're already thinking about some other benefits you can add to the list! Which leaves only one thing left…
How do I get started?
Option 1: Join an existing group
This one is pretty straightforward: take a look at your social feeds, newsletters in your inbox, and websites of industry groups that you're involved in. Odds are that there's a group just waiting for you to hop in and join the conversation.
For instance, if you happen to be an Agents Council for Technology (ACT) Supporting Partner and/or Big “I" member agency, you're welcome to join ACT's AI Work Group! As part of their revamped 2025 Work Groups initiative, ACT recently started up a series of new work groups focused around AI, Data, and Connectivity.
I help co-lead the AI Work Group alongside Andrew Bunyi, Sales Engineer at Rhodian Group, and Colby Tunick, Founder and CEO of ReFocus AI. I highly recommend checking out the webpage and signing up if you're interested (and please let me know if this article encouraged you to join)!
Option 2: Start your own group
While this option is more involved than Option 1, it can be just as rewarding, if not more so. Keeping the key elements in mind of what makes a good work group and how members should benefit, look around your office and social feeds. See anyone who's already contributing to the conversation around AI and insurance? Those should be your first recruits!
Outline the goals and objectives of the group, ensuring there is a clear purpose that resonates with potential members. Establish a regular meeting schedule and utilize collaborative tools for virtual discussions. After that, start meeting! But don't forget to keep your goals and objectives in mind throughout every meeting. Remember: this is to drive growth and innovation, not just catch up with friends.
The Wrap
The independent insurance community is at its strongest when its members work together toward a common goal – and it's going to take the combined effort of agents, carriers, and technology partners alike for an objective like mastering AI. By joining forces with peers who share your enthusiasm and curiosity, you can stay ahead of the curve and keep up with the latest trends and breakthroughs. It's your chance to learn, share ideas, and help shape the future of AI in insurance. When you work as a team, you can never be left behind.
