Senator George Allen to Speak at Big "I" National Legislative Conference

SENATOR GEORGE ALLEN TO SPEAK AT BIG “I” NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE

Nationally prominent Republican Leader to speak at April 22 breakfast

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 10—Senator George Allen (R-Va.) will speak to members of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I”) during their National Legislative Conference next month.

Allen will speak at a breakfast April 22 to more than 900 independent agents and brokers from across the country who will be attending the Big “I” National Legislative Conference. Participants also will include agent and broker leaders from Allen’s home state.

The Big “I” National Legislative Conference is the industry’s best-attended, most effective legislative meeting. This year’s event will take place April 21 through 23 at the Capital Hilton.

“Sen. Allen has risen, in a short amount of time, to a position of leadership in the United States Senate and nationally,” says Big “I” CEO Robert A. Rusbuldt. “As the elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he is considered a rising star on the national scene. In addition, he is a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, which deals with some of the issues that are crucial to the livelihoods of independent insurance agents and brokers across America. Big ‘I’ members eagerly anticipate hearing his thoughts on issues that affect their businesses, from taxes and macro economic issues, to class action reform, medical liability reform and other insurance issues.”

Senator Allen became a member of the Senate Republican leadership in this, his first term. He won his Senate seat in 2000 by winning a tough race against then-Senator Charles Robb (D); Allen was the only Republican to defeat an incumbent Democratic senator that year.

Previously, Allen served as governor of Virginia from 1994 to 1998, a position in which he was limited to a single term by state law. He also served as a U.S. representative from 1991 to 1993, and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1983 to 1991. Allen is the son of the late Washington Redskins football coach George Allen.

“We at the Big ‘I’ are very pleased to have a speaker of Senator Allen’s stature,” Rusbuldt says. “We expect to hear much from George Allen in the years to come, and his appearance at our National Legislative Conference is a great opportunity for our members to get to know him better.”

Highlights of the Big “I” National Legislative Conference will include an in-depth issues briefing session; the annual Big “I” congressional reception on Capitol Hill; appearances by numerous high-profile speakers discussing important insurance and national issues confronting lawmakers as well as agents and brokers in Washington, D.C.; and hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill between Big “I” agents and brokers and their elected representatives in the Congress.

The legislative conference provides an excellent opportunity for agents and brokers to discuss important issues with their congressional representatives. Top issues this year include insurance regulatory reform, tort reform, passage of a flood insurance reauthorization and reform bill, changes in the tax treatment of intangible assets, and more.
