Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to Speak at Big "I" National Legislative Conference

SENATE MAJORITY WHIP MITCH McCONNELL TO SPEAK AT BIG “I” NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE

Nationally prominent Republican leader to speak at April 21 breakfast

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 28—Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will speak to members of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I”) during its National Legislative Conference next month.

McConnell will speak at a breakfast April 21 to approximately 1,000 independent agents and brokers from across the country who will be attending the Big “I” National Legislative Conference. Participants also will include agent and broker leaders from McConnell’s home state.

The Big “I” National Legislative Conference is the insurance industry’s best-attended, most effective legislative meeting. This year’s event will take place April 20 through 22 at the Grand Hyatt Washington.

“In his 20-year Senate career, Sen. McConnell has distinguished himself as a leader and a statesman, and it is an honor to have him address our membership at this event,” says Big “I” CEO Robert A. Rusbuldt. “As the Senate majority whip, he is clearly one of the most important movers and shakers in Congress. He is in a key position to advance reforms on issues our members are very interested in, such as tax reform and legal reform, among others. Big ‘I’ members are eager to hear his thoughts on issues that affect their businesses, from taxes and social security reform, to legal reform and other insurance, economic and national issues.”

Sen. McConnell was first elected to the Senate in 1984. That year, he was the only Republican challenger in the country to defeat a Democratic incumbent, and the first Republican to win a statewide race in Kentucky since 1968. Senator McConnell's landslide victory in 2002, with 65 percent of the vote, was the largest margin of victory for a Republican in Kentucky history.

“Sen. McConnell is a true legislator and leader,” says Charles E. Symington, Jr., Big “I” senior vice president of federal government affairs. “He is respected on both sides of the aisle, and he is known as a thinker, doer and no-nonsense leader. We look forward to having him.”

Highlights of the Big “I” National Legislative Conference will include an in-depth issues briefing session; the annual Big “I” congressional reception on Capitol Hill; appearances by numerous high-profile speakers discussing important insurance and national issues confronting lawmakers as well as agents and brokers in Washington, D.C.; and hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill between Big “I” agents and brokers and their elected representatives in the Congress.

The legislative conference provides an excellent opportunity for agents and brokers to discuss important issues with their congressional representatives. Top issues this year include insurance regulatory reform, legal reform, tax reform, and more.
