This fall InVEST joined forces with the Maryland Insurance
Administration (MIA), the University of Baltimore, and several independent
insurance agencies throughout the state to spread the word about the unlimited
career possibilities for high school students in the insurance industry.
In fact, this insurance education and career awareness outreach
initiative is so important to Maryland, the state has hired a part-time staff member, David Ring,
former award-winning school superintendent from Delaware, to connect InVEST and
University of Baltimore to high schools throughout the state. The goal for this
outreach: bolster the number of students who study insurance and continue
their career path into the insurance industry, whether in an agency or a
company. InVEST has been promoting its free online curriculum, support for
schools and teachers, and discussing the unlimited career opportunities with
the Maryland Insurance Administration as it looks to increase the pool of
highly educated and trained workers to bring more insurance business to the
state. Additionally, the University of Baltimore has just started a new risk
management program to recruit more high school students to their program.
Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer has dedicated his
time and that of his staff to connecting partners with Maryland school
officials and influencers, making this partnership particularly successful. A
former insurance agent, Redmer is well connected to the agency community and is
enlisting its support for this initiative. InVEST looks forward of the
expansion of this program throughout Maryland and hopes to develop similar partnerships
in many other states.
