Colorado Young Agent Awarded Maurice Herndon Scholarship

Jocelyn Horton exemplifies goals of Young Agent Committee and future of industry.

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 3, 2012 — The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America National Young Agents Committee (YAC) announced that Jocelyn Horton of ISU Insurance Services of Colorado, Inc., in Denver, Colo. is the winner of the 2012 Maurice Herndon Scholarship award.

The award is presented to one first-time young agent attendee of the Big “I” Legislative Conference & Convention in Washington, D.C.

“The national Young Agents Committee is thrilled to have Jocelyn join us in Washington, D.C.,” says Jason Cass, national Young Agents Committee chairman and owner of JDC Insurance in Centralia, Ill. “She will be an excellent advocate for the industry and we look forward to watching her grow professionally.”

Horton is a 2011 risk management graduate from the University of Colorado and started her career in the industry the same year. She’s already an active rising star in her state’s young agents program and an advocate for careers in insurance.

“It was wonderful to have Jocelyn participate with the Colorado delegation in Washington, D.C.,” says Barbara Fidler, Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado executive vice president. “She is a shining example of the talent and enthusiasm we find in our young agents and with them the future of our industry is bright.”

The $1000 scholarship award is presented in honor of Maurice Herndon, who led the Big “I” Washington D.C. office in 1949. He coordinated the Big “I” state associations and built the government affairs and grassroots operations through his extensive travel, education, passion and hard work. His impact on the industry has been hailed as immeasurable and he is remembered by the Big “I” family as a true legend.

“Young agents like Jocelyn are the future of our industry and it’s important for them to attend the annual Big ‘I’ Legislative Conference & Convention,” says Robert Rusbuldt, Big “I” president & CEO. “The legislative conference is an opportunity for our young agents to network and interact with agents from across the country, top insurance carriers, other industry leaders and their representatives in Congress.”

The Big “I” Legislative Conference & Convention is the insurance industry’s best-attended, most effective legislative meeting. This year’s event was held April 25-27 in Washington, D.C.
Highlights of the Big “I” Legislative Conference & Convention include in-depth issues briefing sessions; appearances by numerous high-profile speakers discussing important insurance and national issues confronting lawmakers as well as agents and brokers and hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill between Big “I” agents and brokers and their elected representatives in the Congress.

Founded in 1896, the Big “I” is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of independent insurance agents and brokers, representing a network of approximately a quarter of a million agents, brokers and their employees nationally. Its members are businesses that offer customers a choice of policies from a variety of insurance companies. Independent agents and brokers offer all lines of insurance—property, casualty, life, health, employee benefit plans and retirement products. Web address: www.independentagent.com.
