“The Big ‘I’ is proud to present Susan Scott with the 2016 Spirit of Education award for her countless contributions to the association’s education efforts,” says Madelyn Flanagan, Big “I” vice president of agent development, education and research. “Susan’s tireless dedication to ensuring that we deliver quality education programs in Washington and at the national level continue to result in improvements and success.”

Scott has served with distinction for 37 years as senior vice president of education. She was presented with the IIABW’s Burnam Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and the Max Walton Education Award three times in 1983, 1989 and 2005. Under her leadership, IIABW's education department has earned multiple awards, including IIABA’s L.P. McCord and now the Excellence in Insurance Education Award (Gold and progressing to Diamond). Scott has served on a number of IIABA education-related committees and the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner's committees. She has developed and taught numerous insurance courses.

"Susan Scott is one of those exceptional people whose career is one we all hoped to achieve, but few do,” says Sue Knobeloch, Big “I” Virtual University committee chair and executive director of Association of Risk Managers Northwest in Tacoma, Washington. “Susan is an educator, a mentor, a person who helped all of us achieve our goals, someone's whose life goal was to make ‘you’ the best. There is no one more deserving of recognition than Susan Scott.”

The Spirit of Education Award was created by IIABA’s Agent Development, Education and Research Department to recognize a person or organization working closely with the national organization to deliver quality education to Big “I” members across a variety of platforms. The award was developed as a way to acknowledge the very generous contribution of time, energy, expertise and patience necessary to make an education program or offering successful.

Founded in 1896, the Big “I” is the nation’s oldest and largest national association of independent insurance agents and brokers, representing a network of approximately a quarter of a million agents, brokers and their employees nationally. Its members are businesses that offer customers a choice of policies from a variety of insurance companies. Independent agents and brokers offer all lines of insurance—property, casualty, life and health—as well as employee benefit plans and retirement products.
