Leading the Way: The Second Female Chairperson of the Big “I” is Shaping the Future of Insurance

As the second female chairperson of the Big “I,” Angela Ripley enters her term with energy and a commitment to strengthening the independent agency system. While her career has included moments that reflect the challenges many women have faced in the industry, her focus today is on opportunity. She is encouraged by what the future holds for the next generation of agency leaders.
One of the initiatives Angela is most excited about is the ongoing work to build a more inclusive and resilient talent pipeline. “I’m energized by efforts that attract new voices and diverse perspectives into the independent agency system,” she shared. “Our industry is strongest when people from different backgrounds feel empowered to contribute and lead.”
A significant part of that empowerment, she believes, comes from creating programs that help agencies grow and adapt. Angela is a strong advocate for advancing technology adoption, using tools that enable agencies to work more efficiently, compete effectively, and better protect their clients. She sees this as critical to positioning independent agencies for long-term success.
But the initiative closest to her heart is the Women in Insurance programming that will debut at the Legislative Conference in April. The program aims to bring visibility to women at all stages of their careers, foster mentorship, and create space for authentic connection.
“Early in my career, I often found myself the only woman in the room, and at the time, the only woman expected to take on tasks simply just because of my gender. That contrast between responsibility and opportunity made a lasting impression on me,” she said. “As I grew professionally, I was fortunate to have mentors who believed in my abilities and their confidence helped push me past limitations. That experience fuels my commitment to making sure women in our industry have access to the same encouragement, visibility, and pathways to leadership.”
Mentorship is something she speaks about with genuine gratitude. Her experience influences how she supports others, especially young professionals and emerging female leaders. “Find mentors who will guide you to stay curious. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges even before you feel fully ready,” she advised. “Use your voice and know that your perspective strengthens the entire industry.”
Angela is encouraged by the progress she sees today. More women are stepping into leadership, ownership, and executive positions. Conversations about inclusion and diversity are woven into strategic discussions, not treated as side notes. “We’re not done yet, but the progress is real,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see the next generation entering an industry that’s increasingly open and supportive.”
Looking ahead, Angela is energized by the collaboration happening across the Big “I” community, from state associations to agency leaders to young agents. “The energy, innovation, and commitment I’m seeing across the country inspire me every day,” she said. She is especially focused on advancing conversations around talent, technology, and advocacy. She believes these three areas will shape the future of the independent agency channel.
With major initiatives underway and new programs launching, Angela sees an industry on the rise. “So many things are moving in a positive direction,” she shared. “This work is going to propel us into the future.”
