WASHINGTON, D.C., March 13, 2018— The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA or the Big “I") today announced that House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) will address the association's membership on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Whip Hoyer will be a keynote speaker at the legislative conference breakfast which occurs just prior to the association's annual Big “I" day on Capitol Hill. The event will also include remarks by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). Every year, agents and brokers visit Capitol Hill offices to educate members of the Senate, House and their staff on issues that directly impact independent insurance agents, brokers and the consumers they serve.
“Whip Hoyer has dedicated much of his life to public service, and over that time has proven to understand the importance of small business and its role in serving consumers," says Bob Rusbuldt, Big “I" president & CEO. “He understands how main street America helps drive the economy and appreciates what independent agents do every day to strengthen their communities."
As House Democratic Whip since 2011, Hoyer is the second-ranking member of the House Democratic leadership. He is charged with mobilizing the party vote on important legislation, shaping House Democrats' legislative priorities and delivering the Democratic message. Hoyer previously served as House Majority Leader from 2007 to 2011, and as House Democratic Whip from 2003 to 2007.
“Whip Hoyer has long been recognized as a consensus builder and a leader who has garnered respect from both sides of the aisle," says Charles E. Symington, Jr., Big “I" senior vice president for external, industry and government affairs. “We're honored to have him as a speaker and look forward to his perspective on issues of importance to our members and the customers they serve."
The Big “I" Legislative Conference is the insurance industry's best-attended, most effective legislative meeting. This year's event will take place April 18-20 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C.
The Legislative Conference is an opportunity for Big “I" members to discuss important issues with their congressional representatives. Top issues this year include the National Flood Insurance Program, Federal Crop Insurance Program, health care, insurance regulatory reform, implementation of tax reform and cybersecurity.
