Advocacy

We are the voice of independent agents in the political process

We work with state legislators, the SC Department of Insurance, industry organizations and insurance company executives to monitor issues affecting independent insurance agents.

State Issues

  • TORT REFORM
Addressing the legal loopholes that can hold a business unfairly accountable has been our top state legislative priority for several years now, and we finally made some progress in the first half of this session, with clear goals for future legislative agenda. Attempted in 2026 was a bill that sought to establish standards and procedures regarding time-limited settlement demands. Learn more on our Tort Reform Resource page (coming soon).
  • REFORMS LEADING TO REDUCING INSURANCE PREMIUMS
There were several bills during the 2025-26 legislative session seeking to make reforms that would ultimately lead to reduced insurance premiums in the property & casualty marketplace, including liquor liability and medical malpractice. While there was progress on these bills and they generated great discussion, none of them made it across to the finish line before the end of the session. Unfortunately they cannot be carried over to the new session starting in 2027.
  • NEW LAW AFFECTING UTILITY TERRAIN VEHICLES
One law did make it through the session into law, and agents should be prepared for questions from clients regarding how UTV use and ownership may impact their personal auto and homeowners policies and whether a separate recreational vehicle policy or endorsements may be necessary.

State Weekly Legislative Reports

Each Friday during the legislative session, our partners with McGuireWoods Consulting provide weekly State House updates on the activities of both the House and Senate.
