National African American Insurance Association Teaches InVEST® to Detroit Youth

This summer, Michigan's National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) chapter representatives devoted time to educate and train a new generation of insurance professionals as part of the Grow Detroit's Young Talent initiative.

NAAIA teamed up with Grow Detroit's Young Talent, a citywide summer jobs program that employs young adults age 14-24, to prepare young Detroit talent for the 21st century economy using the six-week InVEST® summer program. Grow Detroit's Young Talent paid students to participate in this career training and education after establishing a goal to match 8,000 youths with summer jobs. They surpassed their goal: A total of 8,157 youths ended up in the program across more than 500 work sites.

The city of Detroit donated its Northwest Activities Center for the classroom portion of the program, which taught insurance concepts to 15 students. In this part of the course, Art Judson of Goss LLC joined other NAAIA chapter members to teach the InVEST curriculum. Guests provided additional materials and examples to illustrate how insurance impacts individuals and surrounding communities.
